Yin Yoga

Tuesdays 10-11am

Fridays 6.30-7.30pm

Yin is a slow, mostly still, form of yoga in which we can find a calming experience, soft breath and increase/maintain flexibility, mobility and tissue & joint health. The time spent in poses (this can be between 4-8 minutes) can clear space for you to enter a more meditative experience, or to process whatever is occupying your thoughts. Mentally, it may also allow us to safely explore feelings of discomfort, knowing that we have the ability to alter our experience by adjusting position; either softening the pose or allowing the body to ease into it a little deeper. You might also practice yin just for the opportunity to simply stretch out and relax in a safe, warm environment. This is also fine! Your practice is your own, it’s your body and mind, so I give you options that encourage you to practice in a way that feels right for YOU.

Deeper versions of poses are often easier to use to illustrate shapes (ie the wide leg pose in the bottom right of the image or Happy Baby pose in the top right) but these are just versions of poses we explore. There’s no ‘optimal’ or ‘best’ version of any of this. I don’t want you to contort your body into unfeasible shapes for you. Each pose is an invitation to slowly explore what you experience and how you feel.

Everyone practices yin yoga for different reasons and has different experiences, so I’ve compiled some quotes from people who attend yin yoga classes at our studio in Waterloo, Liverpool, to illustrate just some of the benefits.

“As a woman in my late fifties I have been doing yin yoga to help with my flexibility and mobility, as it helps get to areas of my body without the stress and pain of a gym. I always feel amazing afterwards and the props Kate uses are amazing, especially my favourite the sand bag - it feels like a hug in a bag! I’d also highly recommend this class to anyone new to yoga.” Sharon

“I love my yin yoga sessions because I can lose myself in longer poses and focus on my breath. They allow me to switch off from everything else and escape into a meditative head space.” Emma

“I had never considered yin, as a terminal fidget, until I did a session on one of the Sunday yoga afternoons. I found the slow and gentle pace so calming and restorative. As ever Kate offers different options and invitations to suit everyone. Yin is now my Friday treat to myself. It’s a practice that meets you where you and brings you back to yourself.” Becca

“Yin yoga is my favourite form of practice. I'm always excited to go to a class because I feel great during the session and wonderfully calm and relaxed afterwards. I can feel the good that yin stretches have on my aching muscles! Kate is a wonderful instructor who always gives a variety of options to try because one pose might not suit everyone. The atmosphere in all classes is very welcoming and supportive. I'd encourage anyone thinking of trying yin yoga to give it a go for some quality 'you' time.” Kate

Yin yoga at our studio is held in a heated, candlelit room. Just wear comfortable clothes that don’t ride up. And! If it’s not a busy class you can take a cup of tea in with you!
